About Daily Word

Daily Word is a free word guessing game with one new puzzle every day. Everyone gets the same secret five-letter word, and you have six attempts to figure it out. After each guess, the tiles change color to tell you how close you are: green means the letter is correct and in the right spot, orange means the letter is in the word but somewhere else, and gray means the letter is not in the word at all.

The game runs entirely in your browser on phone, tablet, or desktop. There is nothing to install and no account to create. Your progress, statistics, and daily streak are stored locally on your device.

How to Play

Type a valid five-letter word using your keyboard or the on-screen keys, then press Enter to submit it. Use the colored feedback to narrow down the answer: keep green letters where they are, move orange letters to a different position, and avoid gray letters entirely. You win by finding the word within six guesses.

A new word is available every day at midnight, local time. Solve it each day to grow your streak, and check the statistics panel to see your win rate and how many guesses you usually need.

Tips & Tricks

Open with vowel-rich words

Starting words like ADIEU, AUDIO, or RAISE test several vowels at once. Knowing which vowels are in the word early makes the remaining guesses far more focused.

Use your second guess to cover new letters

Rather than immediately reusing a green letter, it often pays to spend the second guess on five completely fresh letters. Ten letters of information after two guesses beats seven.

Watch out for repeated letters

Words like SHEEP or DADDY use the same letter twice. If the obvious candidates with unique letters are exhausted, consider that a letter you already confirmed might appear again.

Think about letter position, not just presence

An orange letter tells you two things: the letter is in the word, and it is not in that column. Track the positions you have ruled out to avoid wasting guesses on placements that cannot work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it the same word for everyone?

Yes. Each day has one shared answer, so you can compare results with friends. The share button copies a spoiler-free emoji grid of your game.

When does the word change?

At midnight in your local time zone. The completion screen shows a countdown to the next word.

How are streaks counted?

Solving the puzzle on consecutive days grows your streak by one per day. Missing a day, or failing to solve a puzzle, resets the current streak to zero. Your best streak is kept forever.

Where are my stats stored?

Everything is saved locally in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, which also means stats will not carry across devices or browser profiles.

Is the game free?

Yes. It runs entirely in your browser with no sign-up required.

A Short History of Daily Word Games

Guess-the-word games go back decades. The pen-and-paper game Jotto, from 1955, already had players deducing a secret five-letter word from letter clues, and the TV show Lingo brought colored feedback tiles to screens in the late 1980s. The format exploded in popularity in 2021, when a once-a-day web version β€” famously built by a developer as a gift for his partner β€” became a worldwide morning ritual. The daily rhythm of a single shared word proved irresistible, and the formula has since inspired countless variations, including this one.
